The Fedlet: Federated SSO Made Easy
Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 by Enrico
There’s been a recent teaser campaign from Sun introducing the Fedlet. What is the Fedlet? It’s apparently Sun’s hot, new solution to the problem of federated single-sign-on. An identity provider, a bank for example, can use Sun’s Federated Access Manager to create a Fedlet to send to the service providers in their circle of trust. The service provider takes the provided Fedlet and deploys it on their application server and with a little configuration tweaking, single-sign-on is achieved between the identity provider and the service provider. The Fedlet is only 8.5MB and supports both J2EE and .NET, making it a very scalable, repeatable solution. The screencast, while not the most impressive I’ve ever seen, does give a sense for just how easy this can be.
The teaser campaign itself is quite amusing. I think my favourite is this video:
I was also slightly amused by the first part of the campaign, which makes a bit of a Matrix reference and then mixes in some Japanese for good measure:

It so happens that I’ve been studying Japanese for the last six or seven years. Below is my (rough) translation of the above. I do not certify the correctness of this translation; I am not a certified translator by any means. The passage is sort of strange; it looks as though words have been blanked out, probably to “tease” readers. I’ve inserted blank where I believe a word has been blanked out.
“In the next month, the Fedlet will appear in blank (project). This Fedlet is fundamentally a lightweight version of a blank that interacts with blank profiles (translator’s note: So it doesn’t interact with blank?) to federate existing applications. In addition, configurable tasks can be executed from the console. Through these configurable tasks, you’ll be able to create a complete blank file including blank and the associated blank metadata and key stores. Please look forward to announcements, demos, and screencasts over the next few weeks.”
You can see the rest of the teaser campaign and the screencast here as well. From what I’ve seen, it looks pretty impressive.

Hi Enrico! I created the Fedlet website. For that teaser, I simply took the Japanese text from Tatsuo Kudo’s translation of the first mention of the Fedlet. I just blanked out the English words to make it more mysterious - the original is here - http://blogs.sun.com/tkudo/entry/something_called_the_fedlet
It is pretty cool stuff - we’ll be covering it in the OpenSSO session at CommunityOne on Monday - http://blogs.sun.com/superpat/entry/communityone_opensso_session_monday_may
Thanks for noticing, and for writing this up!
