Sun recently acquired MySQL, a gutsy move that some might interpret as a slap in the face to Oracle. Oracle’s database has been a key part of enterprise Java software stacks for a long time and, until this point, a relational database was one of the few things that Sun did not directly provide to its customers. With the acquisition of MySQL, Sun can now develop and offer its own database solution to customers, possibly cutting Oracle out of the loop.

Yesterday, Sun announced the release of MySQL 5.1 and, as it turns out, Innobase OY, a subsidiary of Oracle, is continuing to contribute to MySQL’s InnoDB engine. I must say I was quite surprised. I thought that Innobase OY might stop contributing to the InnoDB engine after the acquisition but it turns out that’s not the case. Even if it is just for the sake of MySQL as an open source project, I think this might become a bit of an uneasy truce.
